The first Haitian Lesbian and Gay Alliance was founded in 2007 in New York City with the goal of providing social services and support to the Haitian LGBT community in the city. The organization also advocated for the rights of Haitian gays and lesbians, working to raise awareness and promote equality.
By 2008, the movement had gained momentum, leading to the first-ever gay rights demonstration by Haitians. Several dozen individuals participated, marking a significant step in the fight for LGBT visibility and recognition within the Haitian community.
Despite these efforts, Haiti currently has no specific legislation addressing LGBT rights. While same-sex relationships are not criminalized, there are no legal protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The struggle for equality and acceptance remains an ongoing challenge in Haitian society.
